RIC VI 5a - Constantius I – 17 viewsConstantius I, as Caesar, 293-305 AD. AV Aureus (5.37 gm). Aquileia mint, struck 297 AD. CONSTANTIVS CAES, Laureate head of Constantius Caesar to right / VOT / X / CAESS within wreath with eagle at the bottom. Biaggi 1845. C. 333. Depeyrot 2/3. Foss 16a (but dated to 303). RIC 5a. Vagi 2858. Provenance: Purchased privately in 1964; probably from the Beaurains/Arras Hoard of 1922, but unpublished as being from there (see, below, 108).
Note: Constantius I rose from humble origins to become the praetorian prefect of Maximian, and was made his Caesar on 1 May 293. His first task, which he successfully carried out, was the recapture of the breakaway British empire under Carausius. He first took all of the usurper’s positions on the continent, and then, after the assassination of Carausius by his far less able minister and successor Allectus, he invaded Britain and recovered the province. For the remainder of his Caesarship he spent most of time fighting the Germans until the abdication of the senior Augusti in 305, when he became Augustus. He died at York (as did Septimius Severus 95 years previously) in 306, while on campaign against the Picts. This splendid coin was long thought to have been struck in 303 on the occasion of Constantius’ decennalia, but Bastien, in his study of the Beaurains hoard (p. 44, n. 1), proves that it was struck at the end of his quinquennalia when vows were renewed for his tenth. The wonderful deep, golden-red toning this has is typical of the coins found in the Arras hoard of 1922: however, Bastien and Metzger had no records of any coins of this type from that hoard and this piece must have been one of those that were held by one of the original finders. The date of this interesting and rather scarce type can be narrowed down as follows: Constantine was made Caesar shortly after the death of his father Constantius on July 25, 306 and remained such until his elevation to Augustus c. Sept. 307. During this period of approximately 14 months, the bronze coinage produced at Aquileia can be divided into three chronological groups. The first group features the introduction of Severus as Augustus and Constantine as Caesar while including coinage of Galerius and Maximinus, Augustus and Caesar respectively of the Eastern portion of the empire. In the second group, Maxentius appears as Augustus, whereas Severus, Galerius and Maximinus disappear from the coinage altogether. Since Maxentius' revolt occurred on Oct. 28, 306, this second group must have been produced after that date and probably not prior to Severus' defeat in the spring of 307, at which time his power over the Aquileian mint would have been lost. The third and final group features a reduction in weight from the full-weight (10.5-8.5 gm.) of the two earlier groups down to the 7.0-6.0 gm. range and is the group which this coin belongs to. It's difficult to say how long coins of group two were produced before the introduction of group three, but if one speculates at least two months to have elapsed it would mean this coin was produced c. June-Sept. 307.
