RIC VII 13 - Constantine I – 40 viewsCONSTANTINE I. 307-337 AD. AV 1 ½ Scrupulum or 9 Siliquae (1.67 gm, 7h), Sirmium mint, 320 AD. Bastien, Donativa p. 76, i. Biaggi –. C. 648 var. Depeyrot 3/2. Foss 66. RIC VII 13.

The 1 ½ Scrupulum denomination was probably only struck on special occasions (in this case as a donative in honor of both Constantine I’s sixth consulate and his quindecennalia), as it fits very awkwardly into the general monetary system. In 309, as part of an important monetary reform, Constantine introduced the Solidus, a gold coin struck at 72 to the Roman pound, which soon replaced the heavier Tetrarchic aureus (60 to the pound) and lasted as the main denomination of the Roman Empire until the fall of the West in 476, and then on into 11th century in the East.
